Pacific Lutheran University fights effort to form contingent faculty union

Tacoma, Wash., News Tribune

April 30, 2013

In a case that could set a national precedent, Pacific Lutheran University is taking legal steps this week to block the formation of a union to represent contingent [adjunct] faculty members at the university. In recent years, universities have become more reliant on contingent faculty in part because of the flexibility in hiring them and because of the lower costs of teaching courses with contingent staffers. PLU’s own figures show that contingent faculty members taught almost one-third of the credit hours last year.
