Myths and Realities of Student Debt: Breaking Through the Narrative

Sandy Baum is among the foremost experts on the subject of college costs and student debt. She has long maintained the current level of student debt is not an existential threat to students who graduate and enter the workforce.  Through the years Baum has learned much about communicating with those who remain focused on the “crushing” debt of a small percentage of borrowers.  She will provide an update on the current level of college costs and student debt as well as insights on communicating about these topics with the media, policymakers, students and families.

SPEAKER:  Sandy Baum, Ph.D., Nonresident Senior Fellow, Urban Institute, and Professor Emerita of Economics, Skidmore College (NY)

4:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Together Towards Tomorrow: Public Policy Efforts for the Future

With both the public and elected officials questioning the value of a college education, legislative proposals are emerging that could harm and not help the ability of colleges to serve their public missions. NAICU Vice President Sarah Flanagan will discuss several initiatives, programs and new coalitions that have been developed, including the Congressional Independent Colleges Caucus, Pell Plus, and the Expansion of Section 127, to promote the strengths of private, nonprofit higher education and illustrate how they will help advance the Association’s larger policy agenda.

SPEAKER:  Sarah A. Flanagan, Vice President for Government Relations and Policy Development, NAICU
