Trump Administration Requests Feedback on Research Environments

December 13, 2019

As a follow up to the White House Summit on Research Security and Integrity, the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) issued a Request for Information (RFI) on the American research environment.  The RFI is seeking feedback on what federal agencies can do to “maximize the quality and effectiveness of the American research environment.”

The OSTP created the Joint Committee on Research Environments (JCORE) to assess four main areas of the American research environment: ensuring rigor and integrity in research; coordinating administrative requirements for federally-funded research; strengthening security of research; and fostering safe working environments. While created just last May, JCORE has already actively reached out to the university research community to develop relationships to foster better communications and best practices in these areas.

The feedback OSTP is seeking through the RFI process reflects the same four areas of interest.  There are questions specific to each area, but generally, OSTP asks what actions can the federal government take to facilitate improvements in the area; how can federal agencies work with academia to improve the area; what best practices and/or policies should be adopted to improve the area; and what incentives can be provided to encourage adoption of the ethic promoted by OSTP.

Comments are due December 23, and can be submitted through the Federal Register.
