Colleges Have Until August 1 to Apply for CARES Funds

June 25, 2020

The Department of Education announced in the Federal Register a new deadline of August 1, 2020 for colleges and universities to apply for Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF) under the CARES Act.  If institutions did not immediately apply for student or institutional funds as soon as they were available in April, they must do so by the August deadline.

The deadline applies to all portions of the funding, including grants to students, institutions, Minority-Serving Institutions, the Strengthening Institutions Program, and the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE).

Institutions must apply first for the student funds before applying for the institutional funds.  Applying for funds involves filling out and signing a Certification and Agreement form and submitting it to the department.

Once institutions receive HEERF funds, they have up to one year from the date of the Certification and Agreement to use the funds.

According to the CARES law, program funds are available to the department for obligation until September 30, 2021, and must be spent by September 30, 2022.
