Bush Signs ADA Amendments

NAICU Washington Update

September 30, 2008

President Bush has signed into law amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act, which his father originally approved in 1990. In a White House statement on the September 25 signing, Bush said, "The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is instrumental in allowing individuals with disabilities to fully participate in our economy and society, and the Administration supports efforts to enhance its protections. The Administration believes that the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 . . . is a step in that direction, and is encouraged by the improvements made to the bill during the legislative process."

Private colleges and universities must comply with the law as employers and as providers of educational instruction. (For more details, see Week in Review, June 27, 2008.)
