Dept. Ed. Issues Guidance on Campus Emergencies

NAICU Washington Update

July 28, 2011

The Department of Education has issued a document, Addressing Emergencies on Campus, providing guidance to campuses regarding their campus safety policies.  The 16-page publication discusses the application of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) in emergency situations.

It also includes information about the campus security provisions of the Higher Education Act.  That legislation covers, in particular, requirements related to emergency notification, sex offenses, missing students, and fire safety -- all added as part of the 2008 amendments to the HEA.

Links to additional resources, including the Department's Emergency Planning Web site, are included at the end of the document.
