In Europe, Fund-Raising Lessons From Americans

The Oxford University £1.25 billion campaign just edged out Cambridge's £1 billion 800th-anniversary campaign as the most ambitious fund-raising effort ever undertaken by a university outside the United States. Both campaigns are part of a broader trend, as universities across Europe realize that in the current economic slump their customary dependence on government funding not only leaves them exposed to the politics of austerity but also puts them at a disadvantage in the global competition for increasingly mobile students and faculty.
