Chained to college debt

Des Moines Register

April 15, 2012

The rising price of college threatens the nation's economic recovery from a deep recession, and can stall the dreams of young Americans eager to buy a house or a vehicle, marry or start a family, federal officials and some economists warn. The college debt challenge in Iowa is expected only to increase in coming years. The student of the future will be less prepared for college, less able to pay and more likely to be a first-generation college student, according to Iowa College Aid, a nonprofit that administers $59 million in state financial support.
