June 13, 2011

DePauw, a recipient of the 2011 Ball Brothers Foundation Venture Fund grant, will begin a new “Eco Reps” program—the first of its kind at an Indiana college. In each first-year residence hall, there will be two student “Eco Reps,” who will help students foster a personal connection with their environment. While advocating environmental stewardship, they will also serve as liaisons between the university and communities in Greencastle. In the nation’s first real-time, nationwide electricity and water-use reduction competition, DePauw was the top campus reducer and had the greatest total reduction across all participating residence halls (per person) with a 25.8 percent reduction in electricity use. Residence halls posted “battle tactics” on each floor which gave students energy-saving tips to help keep the school focused on environmental sustainability.
