Retention Task Force and Student Alert System

Albright College (PA)

The Retention Task Force at Albright College makes sure policies and procedures meet the needs of both students and the college. Initiatives such as comprehensive orientation programs, a first-year student seminar, and "House Call," in which faculty and staff visit students in their residence halls two weeks after classes start to identify student concerns, all focus on helping students prepare for college academic and social life.

An aggressive Student Alert System flags at-risk students. Identified students are contacted immediately and offered support. Last year, 327 alerts were submitted by faculty and staff on a wide range of student issues. The Retention Task Force "saved" 53 percent of students they worked with.

Bottom Line:  In 2009-10, fall to spring retention was 93 percent, an increase of more than 2 percentage points.
