Bethany College (WV)
The Program for Academic and Social Success at Bethany College supports students with disabilities, offering academic and personal counseling, student skill workshops, remedial programs, and mentoring. Students participate in individual appointments with certified, experienced learning specialists to develop strategies necessary for college success.Davis & Elkins College (WV)
The Highlands Scholar Program at Davis & Elkins College offers tuition to freshmen students from seven counties near the campus for the same price as tuition and fees at West Virginia University. Last fall, however, 87 students enrolled as Highlands Scholars, with a total scholarship benefit of $1,186,506. Davis & Elkins has recently applied for a grant that would allow the college to implement an intensive mentoring program for first-generation students from the region.West Virginia Wesleyan College (WV)
Adapting a structure similar to a Big Brother program, West Virginia Wesleyan plans to engage the Band of Brothers, a non-profit, faith-based men's group whose members are college-educated and have professional careers, to serve as mentors to African American male freshmen. The initiative would include weekly dinners, community service projects, and the invitation to worship in churches throughout the community.West Virginia Wesleyan College (WV)
West Virginia Wesleyan College specifically targets first-generation college-bound students through partnerships with Upward Bound and The College Summit. In addition, admission and financial aid staff hold financial aid information nights at high schools with a high percentage of first-generation college-bound students, and provide on-going counseling throughout the year on issues such as the admission application process, the scholarship application process, filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, financial aid award letters, payment options, class scheduling, and all processes related to enrollment.
