The navigation menu above can be seen as a simplified outline of what you will find here. The first four items describe the major aspects of higher education accountability we will address:

  • Regulatory Compliance/Reporting:  Institutional accountability in meeting the multitude of federal, state, and local regulations, as well as mechanisms for documenting compliance.
  • Accreditation:  Intensive and highly-structured examinations of an institution or an academic program using review by a team of peers from other institutions and a self-study by those within the institution.
  • Student Assessment:  Measurements of students' developmental progress, both personal and academic, as they move through the educational institution.
  • Enrollment/Persistence/Graduation:  How students gain access to and select a college, resources to help students pay for college, whether enrolled students continue in their education, and whether those seeking degrees complete those programs.
  • Finance:  Institutional revenue sources (tuition, endowment earnings, etc.) and expenditures (commonly referred to as cost).  Note that student financial aid information appears under "Enrollment."

The last three menu items lead you to repositories for additional information on accountability:
  • National Resources:  Brief descriptions of and links to research and writing on the various aspects of accountability.
  • Institutional Examples:  A compendium of links to accountability efforts and resources at individual colleges and universities, based on responses to NAICU's national survey of accountability at private colleges and universities.
  • For the Media/In the Media:  Links to recent coverage of issues relating to higher education accountability.  Also, News releases, fact sheets, an experts list, and other information of use to members of the news media in covering accountability issues in higher education.
