Campus Sustainability: A Growing Trend

The ivy halls of higher education are getting greener.  Increasingly, private colleges and universities are promoting environmental sustainability on campus, providing a better quality of life for their students and communities and cutting back on skyrocketing utility costs.

What NAICU Has Found

The dozens of campus examples collected by NAICU highlight the growing number of green initiatives taking place at the nation's private colleges and universities.

National Indicators

  • A striking measure of this national trend comes from the U.S. Green Building Council. According to USGBC, the number of campus projects registered for the organization's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification has grown an average 37 percent per year since 2002. The annual increase skyrocketed in 2007 with nearly three times as many higher education projects registering as in 2006.   • The American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment is another way colleges and universities are working to help the environment. The commitment, which already has more than 500 signatories, is signed by college and university presidents who pledge to eliminate greenhouse gases by modeling ways to cut carbon emissions, and by exercising their leadership on campus and in their communities.
