HEA 101 Quick Guide: Consumer Information on College Navigator

(HEA Title I, Section 132(i))
Updates
In the college cost section of the new law is a lengthy list of information about each institution of higher education that is to be posted on the Department of Education’s College Navigator Web site. The Department already collects most of the pieces of information listed in this portion of the bill. However, institutions will have to provide additional information in approximately a dozen areas. This new information will be collected through additional questions on current IPEDS surveys.
When Will This Take Effect?
The Secretary must post this information on College Navigator site by August 14, 2009. Institutions must provide the information in their 2008-09 IPEDS collections so that the Secretary can meet this deadline. The National Center for Education Statistics will convene a “technical review panel” to develop guidance for the collection of “net price” information – which will not be included on the College Navigator site until 2010.
