IPEDS - New Information

As a result of the recent passage of Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, the National Center for Education Statistics will make a number of changes to the IPEDS data collection for 2008-09, to comply with the legislated mandates regarding College Navigator IPEDS Web site. by August 2009. These changes will be mandatory for 2008-09. Updated Institutional Characteristics (IC) forms, upload specifications, and instructions will be available on the IPEDS Web site. The other survey materials for the affected Winter and Spring surveys will be available in the near future. For additional information on these changes, visit the IPEDS Website.

New information items that institutions will have to provide to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) so that this material can be posted on College Navigator include: 

  • Percentage of in-state, out-of-state, and international students;  (This information is collected every other year on IPEDS now; it will now be collected every year.)

  • Information about students registered with the institution’s office of disability services; 

  • Graduation rates within 100% (for 2-year institutions) and 200% (for both 2- and 4-year institutions) of normal time for completion;

  • Number of full-time and part-time students and faculty enrolled in stand-alone graduate or professional programs in which faculty teach virtually only graduate level students;

  • Total annual grant aid awarded to undergraduate students from the Federal government, a State, the institution, and other sources “known by the institution;

  • Average annual amount of Federal student loans provided through the institution to undergraduates;

  • Number of students receiving Pell Grants;

  • A link to the institution’s website, which must provide easy access to information about student activities, services to disabled students, career & placement services, and transfer of credit policies;

  • Availability of alternative tuition plans;

  • Net price;

  • Net price broken down by income categories for aided students.



Also, although this information is not required under HEOA, the 2008-09 IPEDS collection will require institutions to report (Previously, the three items listed above were optional for 2008-09 reporting; they are now required):
  • The average Pell Grant amount awarded to students at the institution;

  • The number of students receiving other grants and the average annual amount received;

  • The number of students receiving other loans and the average annual amount of those loans.
