The Global War Over the Internet

The last few decades have witnessed the growth of an American-sponsored internet open to all, and that has helped tie the world together, bringing wide-ranging benefits to billions. But that was then; conditions have changed.  China has ambitions to remake cyberspace in its own image.  The United States and its allies and trading partners need to pressure Beijing to open up the Chinese market to foreign companies, curb its preferential treatment of Chinese firms, and better protect foreign companies’ intellectual property.  Whatever Washington does, the future of cyberspace will be much less American and much more Chinese.

Leadership in Crisis
Sponsored by
Colleges and universities recognize that a strong reputation leads to high quality faculty, the recruitment of a dynamic student body, supportive and active alumni, a competitive edge in research and grants, as well as the support of local communities and government authorities. Given this, presidents and chancellors across the country and around the world have supported increasingly sophisticated and expensive branding campaigns in order to help differentiate their institutions in a competitive marketplace. Yet all of this work, time, and money spent on brand building, has the potential to be completely undone by one major issue or crisis.  While the risk to a school is large, the personal risk to presidents and chancellors is even more significant.  They put your leadership style and your ability to motivate, inspire and drive behavior to the test. However good the best laid plans, the role of leadership is probably the single most important variable in the perceived—and actual—effectiveness of an organization’s response to a crisis.

Survive or Thrive?  Succeeding in Today’s Evolving Higher Education Environment
Sponsored by

Against the backdrop of recent higher education trends, which we will showcase briefly through industry data, this session will focus on metrics and proactive strategies to help boards, presidents, and leadership teams assess financial and operating risk and develop realistic and actionable responses.  We will explore how a new financial health metric, currently being considered by accrediting bodies, can provide college and university leadership teams with visibility into the relative strategic health of their institutions and enable action before regulatory pressures limit operational options. Attendees will leave the session with an understanding of how the metric applies to private institutions of all sizes and with a menu of actionable responses, based on case studies from the higher education sector.
