The last few decades have witnessed the growth of an American-sponsored internet open to all, and that has helped tie the world together, bringing wide-ranging benefits to billions. But that was then; conditions have changed. China has ambitions to remake cyberspace in its own image. The United States and its allies and trading partners need to pressure Beijing to open up the Chinese market to foreign companies, curb its preferential treatment of Chinese firms, and better protect foreign companies’ intellectual property. Whatever Washington does, the future of cyberspace will be much less American and much more Chinese.
