John D. Grubbs writes: Helping the students evaluate financial-aid award letters has become a bigger and bigger part of the mentoring process. We often struggle to make sense of the award letters. In the past three to four years it has become more difficult to make side-by-side comparisons of offers from several schools. It often seems that the intent of the schools is to obscure the real cost of attendance.
