Roundup: Trump Administration Proposes Tightening Rules for Forgiving Student Loans

July 26, 2018

The Education Department proposed tightening the criteria for student loan forgiveness when former college students accuse their schools of fraudulent behavior.  The plan was designed to help genuine victims of fraud, while limiting frivolous claims by former students, according to the Education Department officials.

The plan faces stiff opposition from congressional Democrats and consumer advocates, who have warned that any effort to limit debt forgiveness would limit the legal options of students with debts they can’t afford to repay.

See the NAICU website for more information on the borrower defense issue.
