A Reboot for Rural Recruitment

A Reboot for Rural Recruitment

January 04, 2024

Miah Bressie, a high school senior from a small town in south-central Missouri, had barely heard of Washington University in St. Louis—let alone considered applying—until a student in the graduating class ahead of hers was accepted last fall. Nestled in the rolling hills of the Ozarks, Bressie’s blue-collar hometown, Houston, has a median income of $40,893 and a bachelor’s degree attainment rate of just 14.5 percent. So for Bressie and many of the other 70-some students in her graduating class, attending a selective, private institution like WashU was seen as out of reach. But then an admissions representative from WashU showed up at the Houston High School college fair last fall, and Bressie’s outlook changed.

Bill Before Congress Could Be "Devastating Blow" to Healthcare Workforce

Bill Before Congress Could Be "Devastating Blow" to Healthcare Work...

December 21, 2023

Mary E. Klotman, dean of the School of Medicine, and Michael Relf, interim dean of School of Nursing, Duke University (NC), write:  bill under consideration in Congress would strip access to federally backed student loans for 3,400 Duke students, dealing a devastating blow to our ability to meet the growing workforce needs of North Carolina – particularly in healthcare. This is a state already dealing with workforce shortages that will only grow over time. By 2033, some estimates project a shortage of 21,000 registered nurses in our state, with additional shortages in areas such as physician assistants, physical therapists, nurse practitioners as well as family doctors.  Congress should not be preventing them from pursuing careers that will benefit all of us.
