Kildee to Receive 10th Annual NAICU Award for Advocacy of Independent Higher Education

Rep. Dale E. Kildee (D-Mich.) has been selected by the nation’s private college and university presidents to receive the 10th Annual NAICU Award for Advocacy of Independent Higher Education. The award will be presented at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 28, at the annual meeting of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU). The meeting will be held at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.

The NAICU Advocacy Award was established in 1993 to recognize individuals outside academe who have championed the cause of independent nonprofit higher education. Whether in government, business, or philanthropy, the recipient of this award has provided leadership, established resources, or enacted policy at the national or state level to significantly assist private colleges and universities in serving their students and communities.

“Millions of students would not be going to college today without Congressman Kildee’s work on student aid, particularly Pell Grants,” said NAICU President David L. Warren. “His efforts to raise the maximum Pell Grant has allowed for unprecedented growth in funding over the last six years. Congressman Kildee’s passion for education and children, and his great respect for bipartisanship make him a true champion of effective policy for America’s students.”

“It is a tremendous honor to receive the Advocacy Award from NAICU for my steadfast commitment to providing access to higher education,” said Kildee. “I have dedicated my life, as an educator and legislator, to helping people reach their dreams by providing them with access to a sound and strong educational foundation.”

Kildee is a senior member of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, and a recognized Democratic leader on student aid issues. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976, after serving in the Michigan House of Representatives for four terms in 1964, and election to the Michigan State Senate in 1974.

Kildee, who will receive the Advocacy Award from NAICU President David L. Warren, will be joined by nine Michigan independent higher education leaders, representing Alma College, the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Michigan, Davenport University, Hope College, Kalamazoo College, Madonna University, and Walsh College.
