Scott D. Miller, president of Virginia Wesleyan University, writes: College and university presidents aren’t financial magicians, though they’re often viewed as such. There’s a well-worn path to the president's office when budgets grow tight or tuition payments are late. Surely the sleight-of-hand president has a stash of money up the sleeve that can be produced as a bailout. Surely the president will wave a wand when consulted about a student’s financial hardship.
