Pell Grant Funding Secured for FY 2009

March 18, 2009

On March 11, President Obama signed the FY 2009 Omnibus Appropriations bill which makes funding for student aid programs for academic year 2009-10 complete, with the Pell Grant maximum at an all-time high of $5,350; campus-based programs level funded; and increases in TRIO and GEAR UP early intervention and support programs.

Senate Majority Leader Reid had postponed the first scheduled vote Thursday, March 5 when he realized he did not have the 60 votes needed. In the end, eight Republicans voted to cut off debate, mostly appropriators; and three Democrats voted against cloture.

Thanks to all NAICU presidents who contacted their senators asking them to vote in favor of the final FY 2009 appropriations bill. It makes the $5,350 Pell Grant for students next year whole.

We look forward to working with all of you on the FY 2010 budget proposals soon.
