Education Department Staff to Shrink

December 20, 2011

Because of budget cuts, the Department of Education staff will be reduced considerably.  That was the message from the Department to the higher education community at a recent meeting.

Although there were no total numbers given, it's expected that the Office of Postsecondary Education - the unit responsible for higher education policy - would probably take a 15-percent hit.  For the second year in a row, the Department is offering early retirement for some long-time staff members.  Several of the certain and quite-likely retirees have worked with NAICU staff on a wide range of issues, from loans to accreditation, and will be missed.

Employees have until midnight December 31, 2011, to make their final decision, and would not return in 2012.
