NAICU’s 2018 Annual Meeting and Advocacy Day to Highlight Key Policy Issues

From a landmark overhaul of the federal tax code to the first comprehensive rewrite of the Higher Education Act in a decade to the funding of the 2018-19 federal student aid programs, private colleges and universities have been in the spotlight here in Washington in recent weeks. 

NAICU’s 2018 NAICU Annual Meeting, February 4-7, 2018 at the JW Marriott Hotel in Washington, DC, will address the implications of these critical legislative initiatives.

The agenda also tackles other national higher education issues important to private college campuses and students.  Key meeting highlights include: 

Monday
  • Norman J. Ornstein, resident scholar and co-host of Election Watch, American Enterprise Institute; contributing editor and columnist, National Journal and The Atlantic, and chairman of the Campaign Legal Center.
  • Joseph E. Auon, Ph.D., president of Northeastern University (MA) and author of Robot-Proof: Higher Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.
  • Michael Rogers, futurist and columnist, The New York Times and NBC.com.
  • Michael S. Steele, co-host of The Steele & Ungar Show, SiriusXM; former Lieutenant Governor, State of Maryland (2003-07); and former chairman, Republican National Committee (2008-11).
Tuesday
  • Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO), chairman of the Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies.
Wednesday
  • Rev. Michael J. Sheeran, S.J., president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, will lead the NAICU Prayer Breakfast.
  • Larry S. Sabato, Ph.D., professor of politics, and founder and director of the Center for Politics, University of Virginia.
  • Sylvia M. Burwell, president of American University (DC) and former secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2014-17). 
NAICU’s Government Relations Academy will focus on development and implications of the tax reform bill, higher education reauthorization and federal spending legislation on private colleges and universities. During sessions at the Public Relations Academy, participants will hear from experts and campus representatives about national perceptions of higher education, dealing with issues of campus culture, and best practices in communications, messaging and reputational management.
