New and Updated Components to Document Student Outcomes

October 16, 2017

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) released results for two new IPEDS components that document student outcomes.  The components include a new Outcome Measures (OM) survey and the addition of Pell Grant and Stafford Loan recipients to the Graduation Rates (GR) survey.
The OM survey counted awards conferred to four groups of students, or cohorts, at six and eight years after entry into an institution in 2008. One cohort, full-time students entering college for the first time, has been documented in IPEDS for some time. The remaining cohorts – part-time students entering college for the first time, full-time students transferring into the institution, and part-time students transferring into the institution - represented new collections. The OM survey also detailed the number of students who were still enrolled in the institution or transferred to another institution.
The GR survey now documents the completion status of full-time Pell and Stafford loan recipients six years after entering college for the first time. The freshman class of 2010-11 represents the initial cohort of first-time, degree-seeking students to be divided into financial aid subgroups.
