Department of Education Provides Hurricane Flexibility Guidance and Resources

September 25, 2017

The Department of Education has released detailed guidance to help colleges and universities affected by the recent spate of hurricanes to navigate potential problems associated with administering the federal student aid programs in the aftermath of the storms. The Department has also provided a list of contacts responsible for specific programs or issues, and compiled a suite of additional hurricane relief and flexibility resources.

Most of the guidance focuses on how institutions can properly comply with existing federal student aid requirements, and the flexibility offered to those institutions by the Department.  The scope of the document is broad, covering topics like accreditation, campus crime reporting, and student eligibility.  The document is a follow-up to a previously issued guidance released in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
