House Appropriators Look to July to Mark Up and Vote on FY 2021 Spending Bills

June 05, 2020

Despite the more than $3 trillion provided in emergency federal funding to address the coronavirus, Congress still needs to pass the FY 2021 appropriations bills before September 30.

With this in mind, House Committee on Appropriations Chairwoman Nita Lowey (D-NY) announced that all subcommittee and full committee markups will be held the weeks of July 6 and 13, and that spending bills could be on the House floor for votes the weeks of July 20 and 27.

Appropriators remain constrained by the budget caps agreed to last year, which do not allow for much of an increase for FY 2021. However, NAICU continues to advocate for increased funding for the federal student aid programs, which families will need now more than ever with rising unemployment due to the coronavirus. A major push by the higher education community to increase federal student aid funding will be very important to students and their families during these uncertain times.
