Education Department Announces Public Hearing on Title IX

May 07, 2021

The Department of Education has announced that it will hold a public hearing on improving enforcement of Title IX. The multi-day hearing will be held virtually June 7-11, 2021.

The goal of the hearing is to solicit public feedback about the Department’s efforts to enforce Title IX, particularly with respect to campus sexual assault. The Department is also requesting comments on the agency’s role in addressing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The hearing is also likely to inform the Department’s plans to rewrite the sexual harassment regulations issued by the Trump Administration.

The public hearing is the first step in the Department’s comprehensive review of the agency’s Title IX regulations, guidance, and related policies. The review was launched in response to President Biden’s Executive Order directing the Secretary of Education to examine the Department’s Title IX policies in order to confirm that such policies are consistent with the Biden Administration’s goal of ensuring that all students are guaranteed an educational environment free of sex discrimination.
