Morehouse Students, Faculty Object to Biden as Commencement Speaker

Morehouse Students, Faculty Object to Biden as Commencement Speaker

April 29, 2024

Morehouse College leaders made a celebratory announcement last week that President Biden would be this year’s commencement speaker. But the news was met with anything but celebration by some students, faculty members and alumni of the historically Black men’s college in Atlanta, who condemn Biden’s support for Israel.
An activist group called Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine - Georgia issued a statement the next day urging Morehouse to rescind Biden’s invitation to speak in May. The group warned that hosting Biden would alienate donors and prospective students and prompt protests related to the ongoing violence in Gaza.

Wells College to Close After 156 Years, Citing Financial Strain

Wells College to Close After 156 Years, Citing Financial Strain

April 29, 2024

The leaders of Wells College (NY) said today the 156-year-old college will close at the end of the spring semester after failing to weather a financial crisis amid declining enrollment. The college, an anchor in the village of Aurora in Cayuga County since 1868, broke the news to students, alumni and staff in a public letter posted on its website this morning. Board Chair Marie Chapman Carroll and President Jonathan Gibralter said that college officials determined the school will not have enough revenue to achieve financial stability in the years ahead.

Round-up: Campus Chaos Spreads over Israel-Hamas Conflict - April 26

Round-up: Campus Chaos Spreads over Israel-Hamas Conflict - April 26

April 26, 2024

With protests over Israel's war in Gaza continuing on college campuses across the U.S., administrators are negotiation with student groups, the University of Southern California cancelled the school's main commencement ceremony, and hundreds of students have been arrested.

At Columbia University, the epicenter of the protest movement following testimony on antisemitism before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce by president Minouche Shafik, D. Phil., negotiations were reportedly ongoing despite a rumored deadline of Thursday at midnight for students to vacate the campus lawn.

Since then hundreds of students have set up similar encampments from California to Massachusetts, leading to a national debate over free speech on college campuses as some Jewish students and administrators say the demonstrations have at times been sites of antisemitism.
