Round-up: DOJ Files Brief with the Supreme Court in Lawsuits Over Student Debt Relief Plan - January 5, 2023

The Department of Justice on Wednesday urged the Supreme Court to uphold the Biden Administration’s stalled student loan forgiveness plan that would erase debt owed by some 16 million Americans.

Lower courts have left "millions of economically vulnerable borrowers in limbo," the administration told the Supreme Court. The justices, it said, should not compel the "damaging and destabilizing result" the administration argues blocking the program will cause.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments next month in a pair of legal challenges over that plan. Opponents say the Biden administration overstepped its authority by creating the debt relief plan without Congressional authorization.
