I come from a family of 12 kids, and I knew early on that if I was ever going to attend college, I’d need help as a “first generation” student (none of our parents went to college and our grandparents didn’t even have the opportunity to get high school degrees). My siblings and I got to go to college thanks to the predecessor of the Pell Grant – the Educational Opportunity Grant – as well as the National Defense Student Loan – and other scholarships.
