Former Creighton President John Schlegel — 'An Extremely Upbeat, Visionary Leader' — Dies at 72

The Rev. John Schlegel, a former Creighton University president known for transformative campus expansion and boosting the school’s stature, died Sunday evening at the Josie Harper Hospice House after a 10-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 72. Schlegel led Creighton from 2000 to 2011, then joined the pastoral team at the Church of the Gesu, serving Marquette University in Milwaukee, and was also a chaplain for the health sciences at Marquette.
