NYU Medical School's Free Tuition Will Build Status, But Not the Ranks of Primary Care Doctors - Opinion

Cary Blum, MD, MPA, an alumnus of NYU School of Medicine, writes:  This summer, officials at New York University's school of medicine made a splash when they announced they are covering the cost of tuition for all urrent and future medical students. After the announcement, there was a buzz within our hospitals. Medical students walked with a spring in their step. Faculty chatted in the halls excitedly. Even the patients seemed to know what was going on.  As an internal medicine resident and an alumnus of NYU's medical school, I didn’t exactly fit into any of the above groups. But the splash got me wet. Instead of feeling like a refreshing summer mist, though, it felt like a bucket of water was dumped on my head.
