NCAA Issues Guidelines for Return to High-Contact Sports

July 24, 2020

The NCAA Sport Science Institute released a set of guidelines specifically to address health concerns and safety measures as they relate to sports that require close contact between athletes.

In the report, Resocialization of Collegiate Sport: Developing Standards for Practice and Competition, the Institute’s recommendations include daily self-health checks, appropriate use of masks, and social distancing during practice, games and outside of athletics.

Testing should be provided for athletes pre-, during, and post-season. Athletes engaged in high-contact sports should have tests conducted and results provided within 72 hours of competition.

The report also emphasizes that NCAA member schools should follow the health standards set by their local communities.

This is the third in a series of reports provided by the NCAA Sports Institute to help conferences develop standards for practice and competition.
