House Committee Holds Marathon Markup of Education Bills
In a marathon markup session, the House Committee on Education & the Workforce voted on a series of bills addressing Title IX, antisemitism, college athletics, and other issues beyond higher education.
Although much of the proposed legislation is unlikely to progress beyond the House of Representatives, the committee ultimately passed three bills that would affect institutions of higher education if enacted.
The first bill, a resolution that would allow Congress to use a fast-track process to strike down President Biden’s new Title IX regulations, passed the Committee on a party-line vote. Biden is expected to veto the legislation in the unlikely event it makes it to his desk.
The Committee also passed a bill that would require colleges and universities to disclose more details about how they process complaints of race, color, or national origin discrimination, including allegations of antisemitic or anti-Arab bias. Institutions would also be required to adopt new policies to facilitate greater transparency.
Finally, in another partisan vote, the Committee voted to pass a bill that would prohibit student athletes from being considered to be employees of an institution of higher education, an athletics association, or an athletic conference.
