House Delays Vote on College Athletics Bill

Faced with wavering support for a bill to reform college athletics, the House of Representatives delayed a planned floor vote on the Student Compensation and Opportunity through Rights and Endorsements (SCORE) Act. It is unclear when, or even if, the vote will be rescheduled.

The SCORE Act, a priority for the National Collegiate Athletic Association, would preempt state or local laws on Name, Image, and Likeness deals, shield college athletics from antitrust lawsuits, and ensure that student athletes are not treated as employees. Although President Trump has endorsed the bill, some Republican legislators remain opposed, and the bill has garnered only limited support from Democrats.

Even if the House successfully reschedules the vote and passes the bill, it is unlikely to advance in the Senate, which remains divided over its approach to reforming college athletics.
