Department of Education Issues Guidance on Artificial Intelligence

This week, the Department of Education sent a Dear Colleague Letter to current and prospective grantees, offering new guidance on how federal education grant funds can be used to responsibly integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into educational settings. The guidance covers issues such as:

  • Developing high-quality instructional materials

  • Providing high-impact tutoring

  • Supporting college and career advising

In a related announcement, Secretary of Education Linda McMahon introduced a proposed supplemental grantmaking priority: Advancing AI in Education. This proposed priority has been published in the Federal Register and is now open for a 30-day public comment period. These priorities will help shape future discretionary grant competitions, signaling a strong federal commitment to innovation in education through AI.

Beyond its grantmaking efforts, the Department is exploring how AI can enhance its own operations. The Office of Federal Student Aid recently engaged current and prospective vendors to identify ways AI could be used to detect and prevent fraud, improve service delivery, and support students in navigating financial aid.
