NAICU Members Brief Hill Staff on Institutional Business Models

Three NAICU-member presidents offered a timely tutorial on the business models that facilitate the private, nonprofit educational enterprise during a Capitol Hill briefing sponsored by the Congressional Independent College Caucus (CICC).

The objective of the program was to give congressional staff a better understanding about the cost drivers, revenue sources, and overall financial framework in which private, nonprofit colleges and universities operate.

Briefing congressional staff were Bradley Andrews, president, Brevard College (NC), Amy Bragg Carey, president, Friends University (KS), and Vincent Rougeau, president, College of the Holy Cross (MA). Bringing their unique perspectives to the briefing, the presidents touched on topics that included the role and function of endowments, the difference between net tuition and sticker price, and the myriad categories of expenses that figure into the cost of educating students.

New CICC co-chairs Ben Cline (R-VA) and Deborah Ross (D-NC) kicked off the session by highlighting the important role that the private, nonprofit sector of higher education plays in communities as a whole and in the lives of their students.

Since the start of the 119th Congress, and with the help of active recruitment by NAICU and its membership, the bipartisan and bicameral CICC has added 11 new members:

Gil Cisneros (D-CA)

Angie Craig (D-MD)

April McClain Delaney (D-MD)

Craig Goldman (R-TX)

Hank Johnson (D-GA)

Tim Kennedy (D-NY)

Darin LaHood (R-IL)

Seth Magaziner (D-RI)

John McGuire (R-VA)

Mark Messmer (R-IN)
