Trump Nominates Barker to Department of Education Post
President Trump nominated David Barker to be Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education. In this role, Barker will serve as a principal advisor to Secretary McMahon on higher education -related issues.
Barker, who will report to the as-yet-unconfirmed Under Secretary of Education, holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago and spent the last six years on the Iowa Board of Regents, governing the state’s public universities.
Next week, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions will hold an executive session on nominations, including Nicholas Kent for Under Secretary of Education. Kent is the former deputy secretary of education for the Commonwealth of Virginia and spent time as the chief policy officer at Career Education Colleges and Universities. The Under Secretary position has historically been the official in charge of the federal higher education policy portfolio.
