New Challenges for Student Visas Ahead
The Trump Administration instructed U.S. embassies and consular sections to pause new student visa interviews while it prepares to implement additional social media screening and vetting of international students. The Administration also announced that the federal government would begin revoking the visas of Chinese students studying in the U.S.
Although few details were available about either initiative, it is clear that both actions would significantly curtail the ability of foreign students to study at U.S. colleges and universities. The pause in student visa interviews will likely cause significant delays in visa processing and result in denials for some applicants, with potentially damaging impacts on institutional enrollment planning and strategy. While it is unclear how many Chinese students will be subject to visa revocations, the impact is likely to be significant.
