Layoffs at Department of Education Temporarily Halted
The Department of Education laid off over 400 employees in a second reduction-in-force (RIF) process. Though most of the offices affected by these layoffs cover K-12 programs, the Office for Civil Rights and the offices overseeing the TRIO programs were affected.
The Department has not yet released specifics of the RIFs, but has shared that the Office of Federal Student Aid, which manages the Pell Grant and student loans, was not included in the cuts.
A federal judge issued a ruling on Wednesday afternoon temporarily blocking the RIFs from going into effect. Hearings have been scheduled for October 28 to determine whether the temporary pause should be extended.
