NAICU Addresses Complexities of Data on College Cost
Responding to a request from Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee Chair Bill Cassidy (R-LA), NAICU will be submitting lengthy comments on several key questions regarding college cost and value transparency.
In general, NAICU’s comments caution against oversimplified federal tools like a universal net price calculator or one-dimensional value metric that could mislead students, urging instead federal data that is accurate, current, and contextualized through stakeholder collaboration. NAICU supports focusing on better, not more, data that is delivered in ways that genuinely help students and families make informed choices without overwhelming them or undermining institutional diversity.
Through the request, Sen. Cassidy asserts that the “committee is committed to advancing bipartisan solutions to improve all stages of the college-going process.”
In addition to NAICU’s sign-on letter, several dozen institutions submitted their own comments to the HELP Committee to reflect their campus perspectives. Further, several independent college and university state associations are also collaborating with their institutional members to submit comments.
At the time of Washington Update’s publication, the final submission deadline had not yet closed. NAICU will re-circulate a final version of its comment letter in next week’s addition of the Washington Update.
