DHS Urged to Extend Comment Period on Duration of Status

NAICU, NAFSA, Association of International Educators, and over 100 other groups urged Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to extend the “Duration of Status” comment period from 30 days to at least 60 days.

DHS published proposed rules in late August that would potentially curtail the amount of time an international student can study at U.S. colleges and universities from a “Duration of Status” to a fixed time period.

In its letter, the coalition of organizations argue that “due to the wide and varied impact of the 160-page rule,” the comment period should be extended “so that the public may have a meaningful opportunity to comment on the significant proposed regulatory changes, economic impact, and burden on those affected by the proposed changes.

The letter went on to say that a “minimum 60-day comment period would allow more stakeholders to carefully examine the NPRM, providing the DHS with essential information and data to consider the scope of related issues, assess unintended consequences, and prevent potential waste of resources.”
