Introduction by Barbara K. Mistick
Dear Colleagues,
NAICU will soon be releasing an updated report on the national economic impact of private, nonprofit colleges and universities. This will be our third update to our original research conducted in 2021. For the first time, we will also have state-level data to share. However, I want to provide a glimpse into what the national data are showing. Nationally, for the 2023-24 academic year, independent colleges and universities:
Generated $839 billion in economic impact
Graduated 1 million students
Supported and sustained 1 million jobs
Employed 2 million people
Generated $122.2 billion in local, state, and federal tax revenue
Provided $4.6 billion in combined impact of charitable giving and volunteerism
These results reflect a strong post-pandemic rebound and demonstrate that the private, nonprofit sector is on the move. Much more data and information will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead.
Upcoming IPEDS Training Webinar. NAICU is hosting the fifth of six IPEDS trainings from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. EDT on February 23. This session will have two parts. First, will be a discussion on the latest regarding the Admissions and Consumer Transparency Supplement, including pressing questions amid your reporting. The second part will focus on the spring IPEDS collection cycle, covering key components like Fall Enrollment, Finance, and Human Resources. You can register for this and the final webinar and view the first four trainings on our IPEDS webpage.
Additionally, IPEDS has updated the Admissions and Consumer Transparency Supplement (ACTS) survey to allow blank values in the “sex” field of record-level data when necessary, simplifying reporting for all academic years collected. Previously submitted ACTS data files do not need to be resubmitted, though institutions may choose to update and overwrite prior uploads.
I hope you have a pleasant weekend,
Regards,
Barbara
