House Hearing Focuses on Impact of DEI on Medical Schools
In a House Committee on Education & Workforce hearing this week Republicans and Democrats offered differing opinions on the impact that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs are having at medical schools.
The highly partisan hearing focused on familiar higher education issues, including DEI, race-conscious admissions practices, and antisemitism, but frequently expanded into broader cultural debates that extended beyond medical education.
The witnesses included representatives from three medical schools that the committee had investigated for antisemitism last year and the President of the National Medical Association.
Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) criticized the “activist infrastructure” at medical schools that “has shaped admissions policies, hiring practices, and even curricula.” Throughout the hearing, Republican committee members pressed panelists about specific courses, instructional materials, and guidance language used at their schools that they found to be in misalignment with federal policy and the underlying mission of medical education. While the schools argued that they had made changes to many of the materials and practices that members took issue with, Walberg indicated that it was important to understand “how those courses made their way into the curriculum in the first place.”
Ranking Member Bobby Scott (D-VA) emphasized that diversity, equity, and inclusion are tools meant to combat discrimination - not perpetuate it, a sentiment that was echoed by several committee Democrats. Many used their remarks to discuss the reduction in staff at the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, the new student loan caps, and research funding cuts at the National Institute of Health. Democrats argued that it is impossible to have a comprehensive medical education without learning about the “social determinants of health,” including how certain diseases disproportionately affect different communities.
