NACIQI Recommends Denial of Recognition for Accreditor; Hears from Kent

During a meeting this week, the National Advisory Committee for Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI) heard from Under Secretary of Education Nicholas Kent and recommended that the Department of Education strip an accreditor’s recognition.

In his remarks to the committee, Kent celebrated the recent negotiated rulemaking on accreditation, noting that three accreditors have already voluntarily withdrawn from federal recognition in response to the proposed changes.

Meanwhile, for the second meeting in a row, NACIQI members, by a 9-3 vote, took the rare step of recommending that the Department deny recognition to an accreditor. In this case, NACIQI members appeared concerned about student outcomes at institutions accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences, one of the nation’s largest cosmetology accreditors. Since NACIQI recommendations are advisory only, it will be up to Kent to determine the fate of the accreditor.

At its last meeting, NACIQI recommended that the Department deny recognition to the Council on Neuropathic Medical Education, but the Department renewed its recognition on a conditional basis.
