Hearing Focuses on Higher Education Post Pandemic

March 19, 2021

Looking to examine the impact COVID-19 has had on higher education, the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Investment of the House Education and Labor Committee held a hearing focused on the sector’s future post-pandemic.  Specifically, the hearing focused on the funding institutions received via the three COVID relief bills, how students have benefited from that funding, and what can be done to improve higher education moving forward.

Chairwoman Frederica Wilson (D-FL) and the Democrats on the subcommittee emphasized the importance of doubling the Pell Grant, increasing oversight and accountability of predatory institutions, the positive impact of increased aid to institutions and students, and the need for more investment in the higher education system.

Ranking Member Greg Murphy (R-NC) and the Republicans on the committee expressed the importance of holding all institutions accountable for federal dollars, the need to bring down college costs, the importance of alternative career pathways other than obtaining a college degree, and the negative impacts of increased administrative professionals on college campuses.
