House Republicans Launch Broad Antisemitism Investigation

The chairs of six committees in the House of Representatives, led by Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), who chairs the Committee on Education & the Workforce, launched a coordinated effort to investigate ten institutions of higher education regarding their responses to antisemitic incidents on their campuses. The broad nature of the investigation marks a new phase in Congress’s ongoing scrutiny of how both public and private, nonprofit colleges and universities have addressed such incidents.

The ten institutions that are the current focus of the investigation are Barnard College, Columbia University, Cornell University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, Rutgers University, University of California Berkeley, University of California Los Angeles, and University of Pennsylvania.

Although the full scope of the investigation remains unclear, the committees are likely to probe institutions regarding their tax-exempt status, receipt of foreign donations, compliance with civil rights laws, and eligibility for student loans, grants, and research funding.
