Campus Free Expression: Challenges and Strategies
Generation Z is the most diverse in history, but many arrive from “think-alike communities” unskilled in discourse with those whose experiences and opinions differ from theirs. Unsure how to navigate challenging ideas, there is a reflexive tendency to shut down discussion perceived to impinge upon campus commitments to diversity and inclusion. The Bipartisan Policy Center’s Academic Leaders Task Force report, Campus Free Expression: A New Roadmap, provides principles and strategies to protect free expression and academic freedom, foster an inclusive culture of open inquiry, and prepare students with the habits of mind and skills to sustain conversations across difference. This session will feature a conversation about the report’s findings and recommendations as well as a tabletop exercise.
